The Trick's On You | Cancer Poem

I wrote this poem previously but never shared it publicly. I had titled it "The Trick's on You" because it was my way of "talking to cancer".

You came into my life; knocked at the door
You weren't an invited guest
You did everything to put me to the test

The emotions that you stirred in me were more than I should feel
Through the uncertainty I did my best to deal;
Willing to change my ways and take care of me
Lucky to have helping hands and gifts of charity

The trick's on you
You took your best shot to try and tear me apart
But little did you know the strength of my heart

You have visited before and met others that I love
Guess you were not sure what you wanted
So you had to come back for more

You had me beat for a day or two
Not knowing if I would pull through
At times my insides were such a mess;
Had to take the days one by one; no more no less

You brought fear and doubt; but my spirit showed you not to count me out
Sometimes those that are least expected
can make you fight for everything and protect it.

The trick's on you
You took your best shot; tried to tear me apart
But little did you know the strength of my heart

We took a rollercoaster ride; curves of emotion and testing of my pride
You allowed me to hope, almost like a tease;
yet instilled me with such fear; you brought me to my knees.

Why, tell me why, did u pick me for such misery;
Maybe now I know it was my fortitude that drove you away from me.

Yet you still know my number and where I call home;
You pass through my mind even when I try to leave you behind
So listen to my prayers; don't return to my body or bones;

Please bid me adieu; because the trick’s on you.
You had no chance against the love of more than a few
You took your best shot to try and tear me apart
But little did you know the strength of my heart

No way would I let you win
You entered my life without an invitation;
Trying to manipulate me from within;
Yet I showed you... my courage and strength have no limitation

The trick's on you
You took your best shot; tried to tear me apart
But little did you know the strength of my heart
