What does this privacy policy cover?

This Privacy Policy covers IHadCancer's treatment of personally identifiable information ("Personal Information") that IHadCancer gathers when you are accessing IHadCancer’s Service. This policy does not apply to the practices of companies that IHadCancer does not own or control, or to individuals that IHadCancer does not employ or manage. In addition, the Service contains links to outside sources, both ones we have added ourselves and ones that members have submitted. Who can see an IHadCancer member's activity?

  • On default, your public IHadCancer activity (status updates, discussion questions, comments) is broadcast to the wider IHadCancer community via the newsfeed. The newsfeed activity is not accessible to the public (anyone not logged in), unless otherwise stated on your settings page.

  • Dear Cancer posts are available to the general IHadCancer community

  • On default, your private IHadCancer activity (journal entries) appears within the newsfeed but only your connections are able to see the actual post, unless otherwise stated on your settings page.

  • When applicable, you can choose to broadcast your IHadCancer activity to third party services like Facebook or Twitter. You have full control on what IHadCancer activity is broadcast to third party services such as Facebook and Twitter.

  • Unless compelled by law enforcement or service of process related to any legal proceeding, IHadCancer will never share personally identifiable information with anyone outside of the IHadCancer network.

What personal information does IHadCancer collect?

IHadCancer is the primary data controller of the information collected. The information we gather from customers enables us to personalize and improve the user experience as well as our services and to allow our users to set up a user account and profile that can be used to interact with other users through the Service. This information allows us to better provide recommendations and it also allows us to share information from partner that we believe would be helpful. This information could be shared, but not limited, to sponsored content, emails, surveys, questions, promotions, notifications, etc.

Please note that we hold and process only the data that is necessary for our service offering and unrequired information you opt to share.

In connection with the Service, we request and display some personal information to other users and visitors of the Service, which allows users to identify each other. We collect the following types of information from our customers.

    Personal Information You Provide to Us:

    We receive and store any information you enter on our Service or provide to us in any other way. The types of Personal Information collected may include your name, user name, country, zip code, email address, phone number, IP address, use information, browser information, type of user, type of cancer, treatment information, resources, journals, blogs, stories and all information encased within the “Profile” section of the IHadCancer site.

    The Personal Information you provide is used for such purposes as allowing you to interact with other users, improving the content of the Service, customizing the advertising and content you see, and communicating with you about specials and new features. We may also draw upon this Personal Information in order to adapt the services of our community to your needs, to research the effectiveness of our network, and to develop new tools for the community.

    The mandatory information required for a completed profile consists of: username, email address, password, user type (survivor, fighter, supporter, or caregiver), cancer type, birth year, gender, country, zip/postal code.

    Personal Information Collected Automatically:

    IHadCancer automatically receives and records information on our server logs from your browser including your IP address, cookie information, and the page you requested. -


    Generally, our service automatically collects usage information, such as the numbers and frequency of visitors to our site and its components, similar to TV ratings that indicate how many people watched a particular show. IHadCancer only uses this data in aggregate form, that is, as a statistical measure, and not in a manner that would identify you personally. This type of aggregate data enables us to figure out how often customers use parts of the Service or services so that we can make the Service appealing to as many customers as possible, and improve those services.

    As part of this use of information, we may provide aggregate information to our partners about how our customers, collectively, use our site. We share this type of statistical data so that our partners also understand how often people use their services and our Service, so that they, too, may provide you with an optimal online experience. Again, IHadCancer never discloses aggregate information to a partner in a manner that would identify you personally.


    Personal Information Used for Automated Decisions

    The information that is provided in a user profile is used to aggregate results on IHadCancer.com/people. We have developed an algorithm that automatically provides results based on a series of filters. This information is also used to base suggested connections for you. This is the only time information is used for an automated decision.

    Third Parties Used On the Site

      Olark (For chatting functionality)
      IHadCancer utilizes a third party chatting system, Olark, to assist with customer service inquiries. Through Olark, we collect personal data - such as IP address, pre-chat survey forms, custom fields or by receiving a chat transcript.       SendGrid (For sending email notifications)
      IHadCancer also uses SendGrid, a cloud-based email service. SendGrid complies with the By Privacy Shield Principles, meaning they can lawfully collect, receive, and process personal data from the EU and Switzerland in the US and beyond. Additionally, SendGrid’s Security has also been recognized by other third-parties including SSAE 16 (SOC 2 Type 2) certification and PCI-DSS compliance.       MailChimp (For other email communications like newsletters)
      For email newsletter communications we use MailChimp, which similar to the services above, allow us to send emails and aggregate information so that we can continue to improve on what we send. Learn more here: https://mailchimp.com/legal/privacy/


      Google Analytics (for site stats)
      For site traffic monitoring and information gathering. This includes but not limited to time spent on the site, pages visited, how many pages visited, geographical location etc. Google Analytics is an industry standard and used by most websites.       Affiliate Links
      Our Shop page and some of our other pages contain affiliate links from Amazon and other sites. If you purchase from one of these links, you will help support IHadCancer and the free content we share. The cost of the product is not affected. These affiliate links take you to the vendor’s site where you can make the purchase. Privacy and terms of use can be found within each individual sites.


      Facebook/Twitter/Instagram
      To make it easier for you to share and engage with some of our content and services we’ve provided ways for you to share, comment and login through third party sites like Facebook, twitter and Instagram. Using these third parties are bound by their own set of policies and terms.


      Email Communications
      By creating an account on IHadCancer, you opt in to site emails, including when you receive a connection request, a ‘hug’, comment or private message from another member. We may receive a confirmation when you open an email from IHadCancer if your computer supports this type of program. IHadCancer uses this confirmation to help us make emails more interesting and helpful and improve our service.


      What about cookies? (Not the eating kind)

      • Cookies are alphanumeric identifiers that are stored on your computer’s hard drive through your browser to enable our systems to recognize your browser and tell us how and when pages in our site are visited and by how many people. We use cookies to deliver the best possible IHadCancer.com experience. Thanks to cookies, IHadCancer.com can remember your preferences such as the font and other options you choose for your computer. Cookies are necessary for certain website features, such as log ins. IHadCancer cookies do not collect Personal Information, and we do not combine the general information collected through cookies with other Personal Information to tell us who you are or what your screen name or email address is.

    Sharing Of Your Personal Information Using The Service

    IHadCancer is primarily designed to help you share information, including your location, treatment information, and all information related to your profile and/or presence on the IHadCancer site with others. This not only includes the information that you provide directly to IHadCancer, but also information that you broadcast to third party services using the Service. You can control your information via the 'settings' tab once you’re logged in.


    Please remember that if you choose to provide personal information using certain features of the Service that information is governed by the privacy settings of those particular features and, unless selected otherwise, may be available to the wider IHadCancer community or may be published on the IHadCancer website, which is subject to indexing by third party search engines unless you opt out. Individuals reading this information may use or disclose it to other individuals or entities without our control and without your knowledge. Therefore, we urge you to think carefully about including any specific information you may deem private in or other user-inputted content that you create in the Service.


    When applicable, IHadCancer allows you to connect with certain third party services (e.g., Twitter, Facebook and other similar services). When you broadcast information to such third party services, such information is no longer under the control of IHadCancer and is subject to the terms of use and privacy policies of such third parties.


    Will IHadCancer Share Any of the Personal Information it Receives?

    Personal Information about our customers is an integral part of our business. We neither rent nor sell your Personal Information to anyone. We may share your Personal Information only as described below.



    Affiliated Businesses We Do Not Control: In due course, IHadCancer may become affiliated with a variety of businesses and work closely with them. In certain situations, these businesses sell items or provide promotions to you through IHadCancer’s Service. In other situations, IHadCancer provides services, or sells products jointly with affiliated businesses. You can easily recognize when an affiliated business is associated with your transaction, and we will share your Personal Information that is related to such transactions with that affiliated business, if you have agreed to be solicited by marketing partners during the registration process.



    Agents: We employ other companies and people to perform tasks on our behalf and need to share your information with them to provide products or services to you. Unless we tell you differently, IHadCancer's agents do not have any right to use Personal Information we share with them beyond what is necessary to assist us. By using the Service, you hereby consent to our sharing of Personal Information for the above purposes.



    User profiles: User profile information including user name, Twitter account name, Facebook account name (when applicable) , and all other information you enter may be displayed to other registered users to facilitate user interaction within the Service. Users' email addresses will not be directly revealed to other users by Company, except, when the user is "connected" to another user as a Friend and chooses to email them from within the Service.



    Communication in response to User Submissions: As part of the Service, you will receive IHadCancer emails and other communication relating to your User Submissions. You acknowledge and agree that by posting such User Submissions, IHadCancer may send you emails and other communication that it determines in its sole discretion relate to your User Submissions. IHadCancer will also use your email to send you updates/notifications when you receive a new friend request, “hugs”, comments to your Dear Cancer posts, Discussions or other content you participate in.



    Promotional Offers: As part of the Service you may be exposed to offers on behalf of other businesses. However, when we do so, we DO NOT give the other business your name and address.



    Invitations: When you invite someone to join the IHadCancer community, please be aware that we will disclose your real name, as an invitation containing your name will be sent to the email address of the person you wish to invite. This information is necessary to make sure your invitee knows who has contacted them. To build a community based on trust and empathy, we feel this disclosure is necessary.



    Business Transfers: In some cases, we may choose to buy or sell assets. In these types of transactions, customer information is typically one of the business assets that is transferred. Moreover, if IHadCancer, or substantially all of its assets were acquired, or in the unlikely event that IHadCancer goes out of business or enters bankruptcy, customer information would be one of the assets that is transferred or acquired by a third party. You acknowledge that such transfers may occur, and that any acquirer of IHadCancer may continue to use your Personal Information as set forth in this policy.

    Non-Private or Non-Personal Information: For clarity, we may share or disclose your non-private, aggregated or otherwise non-personal information, such as the number of users who live in a given city/zip code (even if only one user does).


    Your IHadCancer account Personal Information is protected by a password for your privacy and security. You need to prevent unauthorized access to your account and Personal Information by selecting and protecting your password appropriately and limiting access to your computer and browser by signing off after you have finished accessing your account. Your email address, password and any other private information will never be shared.


    IHadCancer is committed to protecting user information and ensuring that user account information is kept private, however, IHadCancer cannot guarantee the security of user account information. Unauthorized entry or use, hardware or software failure, and other factors, may compromise the security of user information at any time. In using the services, you acknowledge that breaches in security may occur from time to time, and hold IHadCancer harmless if they do.

    The Service may contain links to other sites. IHadCancer is not responsible for the privacy policies and/or practices on other sites. When linking to another site you should read the privacy policy stated on that site. This Privacy Policy only governs information collected on the Service.


    What Personal Information Can I Access?

    IHadCancer allows you to access the following information about your own account for the purpose of viewing, and in certain situations, updating that information. This list will change as our Service changes.

    How Can I Protect My Privacy?

    There is always a risk that any information you share online can be tied back to you. If would like to remain an anonymous user of IHadCancer.com, there are some steps that you can take to protect your own privacy:

    • Do not use your full name, email address or anything identifiable when creating a username.

    • Do not share your address, full name, email address or anything identifiable with someone you do not know.

    • Do not post your address, full name, email address or anything identifiable when engaging in things such as comments, discussions, journals, dear cancer.

    • Protect your password by creating one that is unique.

    • Only use a photo of yourself if you are comfortable sharing your identity.

    • Do not share identifiable information about others unless you have explicit permission.


    Please contact us if you would like to request a copy of your personal data in electronic format, free of charge.

    How Do I Deactivate My Account?

    Should you ever decide to deactivate your IHadCancer account, you may do so by clicking the deactivate button in the settings tab. If you deactivate your account, your profile, including any messages in your inbox and any promotional offers you received, may be removed from the site and deleted from IHadCancer's servers. Because of the way we maintain IHadCancer, such deletion may not be immediate, and residual copies of your profile information or posts may remain on backup media. If you choose to deactivate your account, you will have to contact the site administrator to enable it again.

    If you would like to permanently erase all of your personal data and site usage please contact us and we would be happy to do so for you.

    What Are My Rights Under the GDPR?

    All members of the EU are guaranteed eight fundamental rights, all of which have been addressed in the privacy policy.

    1. The right to be informed – As outlined in the above privacy policy, IHC is transparent in how we are using your personal data.

    2. The right of rectification – you are entitled to have your personal data rectified if it is inaccurate or incomplete.

    3. The right of access – you have the right to know exactly what information is held about you and how it is processed on IHC.

    4. The right to erasure – you have the right to have your personal data deleted or removed without the need for a specific reason.

    5. The right to restrict processing – you have the right to block or suppress processing of your personal data.

    6. The right to data portability you have the right to retain and reuse your personal data submitted onto IHC for your own purpose.

    7. The right to object - in certain circumstances, you are entitled to object to your personal data being used.

    8. Rights of automated decision making and profiling – you are protected against the risk that a potentially damaging decision is made without human intervention.

    Changes to this Privacy Policy

    This policy was last updated on May 24, 2018. IHadCancer may amend this Privacy Policy from time to time. Use of information we collect now is subject to the Privacy Policy in effect at the time such information is used. If we make changes in the way we use Personal Information, we will notify you by posting an announcement on our Service or sending you an email. Users are bound by any changes to the Privacy Policy when he or she uses the Service after such changes have been first posted.
